Value of Learning

I was working on a project and email marketing was an integral part of my role in the project. One of the mailing lists that I received was a sheet with about 10,000 names of clients and I noticed that the names were capitalized and the full names of each client were in a single column. I had just 3 hours to send the newsletter out and it was frustrating to start separating each cell into columns manually.

I chatted a colleague up to see if he could do it from his end, however, he failed to get it done after circling the document in 1 hour. With less than an hour to go, I turned to the internet to check out how to split cells into columns. After noting the tips from the explanatory videos on the internet, I finally found a way around it that helped me get it done in a matter of seconds.

That piece of knowledge just saved me hours of manual work. This is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life but in a new way. The American Bar Association’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct states that: “To maintain the requisite knowledge and skill, a lawyer should keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology”. Very succinct! A great way to achieve this is by using the right tools.

Do you have the right tools to keep you on top of your game as a professional? If you don’t, what will you do differently today to change that? Tell us in the comments below.
