The Nagamoto Retainer: The Race Against Time

  • DOCUMENT DRAFTING AND REVIEW
  • LEGAL RESEARCH
  • PRACTICE AUTOMATION USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

While Bar. Grace was having a sleepless night, Bar. Nathan was also responding to the e-mail, he started working on the brief after sending his firm’s profile and a draft retainer agreement. He had some problems with the hourly rates as he was not used to providing such information, but he spoke to a friend who was conversant with foreign clients and got a draft that he converted to his own and also sent along. By the time he was done with the acknowledgement e-mail, it was already midnight.

Bar. Nathan toiled through the night and refused to leave his hotel room for morning events and breakfast as he was on the phone with his team in Nigeria whom he woke up as early as 3 am Nigerian time to conduct the necessary research. His team, however, had a problem because of the time. Nobody was at the office where the expansive law library with leatherbound books and all the law reports resided.

Also, the young lawyer who just joined the firm a week ago was trying to help the Lagos team out with his millennial googling skills but there where multiple versions of legislations and even Supreme Court judgments and thus everyone was working blind.

Nathan’s team eventually rushed to the office to commence “serious work” as early as 5 am and one of his partners called his friend practicing in Edo state to help with Civil Procedure Rules there, unfortunately, his friend was a new wig who had just gotten called to the bar 3 weeks ago and had done one or two business name registrations in Edo state. They eventually contacted a Senior Advocate of Nigeria based in Edo state, but he didn’t respond to them till it was 9 am.

By the time they sent the opinion on the commercial aspect and the litigation aspect it was 2 pm Seoul time.

Bar. Jimoh didn’t receive the mail as his mailbox was still not working.

ACTIONS

HOW DO YOU COORDINATE THE COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE REPRESENTED BY YOUR LAWYERS TOWARDS ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE?

Bar. Grace had access to LawPavilion PRIME and LawPavilion Solicitors and Arbitrators Toolkit on her LawPavilion Case Manager. She also remembered a similar opinion that one of her staff had written 3 weeks ago and carried out a search to use it as a framework for the commercial opinion. The litigation team used LawPavilion’s TIMI artificial intelligence legal assistant to call up Court Processes and Insight notes on Courts in Edo state.

The new wig who had just joined the firm 2 days ago and was called 3 weeks ago was given the responsibility of drafting the Court documents for the case in Edo state. He completed the task in 30 minutes.By 9 am Seoul Time, she had sent her opinion to Nagamoto and she spent the day discussing details of the brief with Miko during breakfast at the conference.
