NBA AGC DAILY – Wednesday 28th August 2019 Highlights

This year’s  NBA Annual General Conference is slowly grinding to a halt today with the Press Conference by the NBA President, Paul Usoro SAN and the Association’s Annual General Meeting scheduled to start by 9:30 am. It has indeed been a productive time for all.

Here are highlights of yesterday’s activities and thoughts from the Plenary Session on The Future of The Legal Profession, and The Regulation of Legal Practice and Practitioners.

THE CRISIS OF SEXUAL AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN OUR COMMUNITIES

This session was of great interest to many legal practitioners especially those within the human right advocacy and gender issues practice space. The Chairman of the session H.E. Erelu Bisi Fayemi led the speakers, Olawale Fapohunda (A.G and Commissioner for Justice of Ekiti State), Rhoda Tyoden (President of FIDA Nigeria) and Itoro Eze Anaba (Founder Mirabel Centre), through the discourse.

They all emphasised the need to care about gender-based violence especially violence against women. Ms. Itoro Eze Anaba shared on some of the cases the Mirabel Centre is working on. She shared that there is an increasing spate of incest in the country as many girls are being raped by their fathers. At the end of the session, it was agreed that there was a need to change the narrative on Gender-Based Violence and to do so quickly.

LAW CLINIC – TECHNOLOGY, ELOQUENCE, BRANDING, MILLENNIALS AND PRACTICE MANAGEMENT 

This session was the draw of many of the young lawyers at the Conference. The session was facilitated by experts in the areas in focus: Dr Adeoye Adefulu (Moderator), Samuel Falolu (Google Digital Skills Trainer), Joy Harrison-Abiola (Association of Law Firm Administrators of Nigeria), Adeyinka Aroyewun (Director of the Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse), Yomi Badejo-Okusanya (GMD of CMC Connect Limited), Ubong Essien, CSP (Dean, School of Eloquence) and Yimika Adesola (CEO, Legally Engaged). The speakers spoke extensively on the need for law clinics to begin to open up to the technological changes. Furthermore, legal practitioners should rebrand while also effectively reorganising their legal practice.

PLENARY SESSION – THE FUTURE OF THE LEGAL PROFESSION, AND THE REGULATION OF LEGAL PRACTICE AND PRACTITIONERS

The plenary session was an insightful icing on the cake for the entire conference. It featured the report of the Nigerian Bar Association Legal Profession Regulation Review Committee (NBA LPRRC) delivered by Chief Anthony Idigbe, SAN. The session also witnessed a series of what many young lawyers will term “table shaking”, especially as it affects the conduct of legal professionals on ethical issues and the welfare of young lawyers. The other members of the plenary panel led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, OFR, Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, SAN and Senator Ita Enang emphasised the need for self-regulation of the bar.
