Mind Your Health: Don’t argue with your health

Studies revealed that 60% of the legal profession in other climes battle with depression, anxiety, stress and other mental health issues. Thankfully, it is on the low side in Nigeria. Probably we have “resistance” to issues like that in this part of the world.

On 2 February 2022, I fell ill seriously. It was not like I didn’t feel the symptoms beforehand, I just ignored the warning signs because, on the outside, everything looked perfect. I was still preparing to go to court that fateful morning and the only thing that I can remember was that I could barely breathe and was ultimately rushed to the hospital. It was a combination of accumulated stress.

You know law practice will come with some level of stress, so how can you stay healthy as a legal practitioner?

Here are some hacks:

  1. Drink plenty of water.:

Sometimes we get too carried away by the activities of the day and we find it difficult to stay on top of hydration. Drinking enough water each day is crucial for many reasons: enables your cells and organs to work properly, helps you stay focused, prevents headaches and more. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water daily to help you stay hydrated and active and avoid drowsiness or sluggishness. Learned professional, how many glasses of water have you taken today?

2. Take a break and exercise: Talk of a sedentary lifestyle, the long hours in courts, stress associated with the practice, and all that long hours of sitting behind the desk or courtrooms activities—it’s important to take a break in between and take a brisk walk or move around to overcome these demands that take a toll on your health. This would not only help to improve your stamina and balance, it can even lead to better sleep and boost your energy.

3. Work Smarter: To ward off stress, you need to stay organized. As deadlines, responsibilities and the likes keep you busy and make us notorious “hard-workers”,  there are ways to promote your health and take better care of yourself by using tech options to make your work easier. One of the smart technologies to use is CaseManager.

Trust me, that notorious “unsmiling look of yours” will fade away.

So, how’s Your Legal Health?

In the next series, we will discuss High blood pressure and Cardiovascular diseases..
