Picture this!
It’s 2 AM, and you’re drowning in a pool of legal documents, frantically searching for that one crucial precedent that could make or mar your case coming up in the next few hours. Sound familiar?
Realizing how pressed you’re for time, you decide to leverage the generic GPTs. After all, It is AI!
In a few attempts, you got responses like “DISCLAIMER!” 5 to 10 times. You eventually got a usable result and asked it to give you recent Nigerian authorities to support your position. Then you are met with “This result is as at my last update on xxxx“. Glad that you at least got something, you copied the supplied authorities for use in your legal document.
Just then, you thought to check out one of the cases only to discover that the cases and statutes cited do not exist! They are mere imaginations of the AI model!!
How preposterous?
For countless Nigerian lawyers, this scenario is an all-too-common reality. But it’s not the AI’s fault, it just wasn’t trained to handle the labyrinth of Nigerian law, with its vast array of statutes, case laws, and ever-evolving regulations.
In this blog, I will introduce you to LawPavilionGPT – an advanced generative AI specifically built for the Nigerian legal sector and trained to understand the nuances of Nigerian Laws. This targeted training allows it to understand legal concepts, analyze case precedents, and identify relevant legal authorities fit for the Nigerian legal sector.
To show the unique advantages that LawPavilionGPT has over generic GPTs, we’ll practically explore the distinctive features of LawPavilionGPT, as a legal-specific software, in comparison with 3 generic GPTs out there, viz.; Claude AI, Gemini and ChatGPT. And, ultimately, we would discuss how LawPavilionGPT helps you improve performance and productivity while making the once-tedious legal research exercise fun for your team.
Shall we begin?
LawPavilionGPT represents a quantum leap in legal research technology. At its core, it’s an advanced artificial intelligence system infused with legal expertise. LawPavilionGPT is designed to understand, interpret, and provide insights into Nigerian law with unprecedented speed and pinpoint accuracy.
While LawPavilionGPT is built on a foundation of cutting-edge natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning technologies. LawPavilionGPT utilizes a sophisticated Large Language Model (LLM), what sets LawPavilionGPT apart is its laser focus on Nigerian legal research resources and advanced semantics tools.
LawPavilionGPT is specifically trained on an exhaustive database equipped with the knowledge of vast statutory authorities, over 60 years of judicial authorities, regulations and several legal texts. This empowered it to understand the nuances of the Nigerian courts, the precedent system, and the interplay between statutory and case law in the Nigerian context.
Its advanced semantic analysis capabilities allow the AI to understand the context and nuances of legal language, going beyond simple keyword matching. This capability aids LawPavilionGPT’s Deep Learning algorithms to identify Nigerian legal terminologies, legal procedures, court rules, and administrative processes.
Consequently, LawPavilionGPT combines the power of advanced artificial intelligence with a deep, nuanced understanding of Nigerian law. It doesn’t just find legal information, it comprehends your legal query in the unique context of the Nigerian legal system and provide instant, relevant and reliable answers to your most complex legal queries.
LawPavilionGPT is developed by the foremost legal tech company in Nigeria – LawPavilion and it is available on its LawPavilion Prime and Primsol platforms.
So, to the practicality of what we’ve been discussing, We asked both open (Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT) and legal-specific(LawPavilion PrimsolGPT) the following 2 legal questions and below are their responses:
Question:
“On Corporate law, if a manufacturing company unknowingly produces an item that has just been listed in the contraband products in Nigeria. So, NAFDAC, the agency in charge, is levying a heavy charge against the company. As a solicitor to the manufacturing company, what should I do?
“Great! Now give me 5 relevant authorities to this case
As you can see, ChatGPT could not give the applicable legislation, straight up. It rather advised that we ‘review the legislation’; which translates to additional research for the user.
When further prompted with: “Great! Now give me 5 relevant authorities to this case“, below is the response:
Here again!
It gave the general legislation, without the specific sections of the Law that applies to the legal question posed. This shows that the model lacks semantic analysis capabilities to understand the particular context of the question posed, and the specific section of the law to be applied.
You’ll agree that this isn’t an efficient method of legal research. Best do away with it!
2. Claude AI
Claude AI upfront discloses that whatever information it was going to give us would be ‘general in nature’ before going ahead to list steps to be taken, similar to those recommended by the earlier model, ChatGPT.
When further prompted with: “Great! Now give me 5 relevant authorities to this case“, below is the response:
3. Gemini
Gemini is another brilliant AI. And it’s not long before one would see the disclaimer again, followed by generic advice and when prompted further with: “Great! Now give me 5 relevant authorities to this case“, we got the response below:
Such an honest model! It quickly came up with a disclaimer highlighting its inaccuracy and the possibility of not being up-to-date.
As you already know, law is a dynamic field and staying abreast of recent changes is one of the ways to set one’s practice apart. Relying on generic AI model as this will likely lead to inaccurate and outdated results.
4. LawPavilionGPT (PrimsolGPT)
Bravo! LawPavilionGPT did not just answer the question, it cited specific sections of the law and applicable cases to back up its answers and without further prompt, it listed out other cases and laws applicable to the answer.
Is there a BETTER way to go about this than what we’ve got here?
