This first edition is a Fireside Chat with two amazing legal practitioners – Rosemond Phil-Othihiwa and Olumide Babalola, who will be sharing insights with us on the theme of this edition of the series, “Creating Your Path as a New Generation Lawyer”. Check out their profiles below:

ROSEMOND PHIL-OTHIHIWA

Rosemond Phil-Othihiwa

Rosemond Phil-Othihiwa is an astute Corporate and Commercial Attorney who has garnered experience in providing legal advisory services to business owners and corporate clients for close to a decade, especially on tax and corporate due diligence, as well as compliance.
An alumnus of the University of Benin, she practised as an Associate in the law firm of Olatunde Adejuyigbe SAN & Co before joining the firm of Debo Akande LLP as Partner.

Due to her passion for mentorship and continuous legal Education, She is the current Chairman of the Continuing Legal Education Young Lawyers Forum, Nigerian Bar Association Ikeja and also hosts her Mentorship programme for Young Lawyers tagged #theyounglawyermentorshipseries which has hosted global thought leaders such as Mr Francisco Frank Ramos, Managing Partner Clarke Silvergate P.A, Mr. Babatunde Ajibade, SAN amongst others.

She is also the Chairperson of the Internship Committee of the African Bar Association (Nigeria Branch), a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation Nigeria(CITN), the Corporate Communications Officer of the Pan African Women’s
Network as well as a member of other Non-Governmental Organisations where she pushes for impact, growth and continuous personal and professional development.

She is a prolific legal researcher, author, speaker, writer and scholar whose greatest desire is to deliver optimal solutions to client needs through excellence, diligence and integrity while spurring career professionals to aim for progressive career development and impact.

OLUMIDE BABALOLA

Olumide Babalola, a current LLM (International commercial Law with ICT Candidate) at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, is a consummate privacy and data protection lawyer in Nigeria. 

His expansive work around data protection saw him publish Nigeria’s first textbook on data protection in 2020 – an editorial compilation of 144 decisions of the European courts on the subject. Olumide has spoken on issues surrounding privacy and data protection at local and international conferences including RightsCon in Tunis (2019) the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Berlin (2019), Africa Law Tech Conference in Nairobi (March 2020), PivSec Global (2020), Workshop on Fintech by the European Commission (2021), Privacy Symposium b Unwanted witness in Uganda (2021) and  PrivSec New Normal in London, United Kingdom (2021) etc.

In September 2021, he led the team that worked on a pan-African report on data protection authorities in Africa and in November 2021, on the invitation of the African Economic Research Consortium, Kenya, he presented a research paper on ‘data protection legal regime and data governance in Africa’ at the Regional Policy Forum on data governance and sound policymaking in Africa.

In December 2021, Olumide will officially present his new book titled ‘Privacy and data protection law in Nigeria’ to the public. The book also prides itself on being Nigeria’s first academic book on the right to privacy. Olumide is the managing partner of Olumide Babalola LP and a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and International Network of Privacy Law Practitioners etc.
